First Meeting of the Ministers of Communications

On November 29, 2011, the city of Brasilia hosted the I Meeting of Communications Ministers of the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) Member States, within the framework of the II Meeting of the South American Infrastructure and Planning Council (COSIPLAN). At the meeting, participants discussed possible mechanisms to increase access, reduce costs, and exercise greater sovereignty over broadband communications in the region.

Among the main agreements reached, it can be mentioned that the group expressed its support to include a guideline to encourage the intensive use of Information and Communications Technologies (ICTs) in the COSIPLAN Strategic Action Plan (PAE) 2012-2022, as well as the commitment to promote actions to build a South American Fiber Optic Ring. Furthermore, it was decided to recommend the COSIPLAN Ministers the creation of a Working Group on Telecommunications in South America.
