On May 21, 2014, the city of Montevideo, Uruguay, hosted the Meeting of the Working Group on South American Rail Integration, which was attended by delegations from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela as well as by representatives of the UNASUR General Secretariat and of IIRSA Technical Coordination Committee.
The meeting objectives and expected results were: (i) reach a consensus with a view to consolidating a map of the existing rail networks for use until the COSIPLAN Geographic Information System (GIS) is implemented; (ii) agree upon the descriptors and results indicators for the rail sector on the basis of those proposed at the Meeting to Update the COSIPLAN Portfolio and API held in April in Bogotá; (iii) exchange information about the UNASUR countries’ national rail development plans with a focus on the points of interconnection; (iv) reach an agreement concerning the Terms of Reference for the call for consultancy services; and (v) define the future activities of the Working Group, especially those set forth in the Work Plan 2015.
